Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived to a grand welcome in Bangkok on Thursday. The Prime minister, who is visiting Thailand for a two-day visit, will be attending the 2025 edition of BIMSTEC summit amid ongoing tariff war. PM Modi was received by the Deputy Prime Minister & Minister of Transport Suriya Jungrungreangkit.
Members of Indian diaspora were seen welcoming the Prime Minister amid cheers of ‘Modi, Modi chants.’ The Prime Minister took to X to share the glimpse of his arrival in Bangkok. In his post in Thai language, PM Modi said, “Looking forward to participating in the upcoming official meeting and promoting cooperation between India and Thailand.”

The Ministry of External Affairs termed Thailand as “special maritime neighbours with shares civilizational bonds.”
After his Thailand visit, PM Modi will be visiting Sri Lanka. This will be his first visit to the island nation since the new Sri Lankan President came to power.
Later in the day, the Prime Minister will join the BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) leaders from Thailand, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Myanmar and Bhutan to oversee the signing of the Agreement on Maritime Cooperation.
The sixth edition of the Summit comes on the day when details of US President Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariffs are emerging. This will also be the first time that PM Modi will see Bangladesh Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Myanmar military junta leader Min Aung Hlaing.
In his statement ahead of the visit, PM Modi described this key economic bloc as “significant forum for promoting regional development”.
