An Air India aircraft carrying 242 passengers bound for London crashed during take-off at the Ahmedabad airport on June 12, triggering a massive emergency response.

An Air India flight bound for London Gatwick crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday afternoon. Flight AI171, operated by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner (VT-ANB), was carrying 242 people, including 2 pilots and 10 cabin crew, when it went down just beyond the airport perimeter.

Visuals from the scene showed thick plumes of smoke rising from the runway area, with seven fire engines deployed immediately to control the situation.

According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the aircraft took off from runway 23 at 1:39 PM IST and issued a MAYDAY call shortly after. However, it failed to respond to subsequent attempts by air traffic control to re-establish contact. Eyewitnesses and visuals from the scene showed thick black smoke billowing from the crash site, prompting a massive emergency response.

The pilot in command, Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, had over 8,200 hours of flying experience, while First Officer Clive Kundar had logged 1,100 hours. Three teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), comprising 90 personnel, were deployed from Gandhinagar, with three more teams being rushed in from Vadodara to aid in rescue efforts.

The incident occurred just as the flight was taking off, officials told PTI. Emergency services were swiftly mobilised, and efforts are underway to assess casualties, if any.

Footage shared by news agency PTI captured the dramatic moment smoke bellowed from the crash site, sparking panic among airport staff and onlookers.

Air India has acknowledged the incident, stating that details are being ascertained and updates will be shared as soon as available.

Minister of Civil Aviation, Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, tweets, "Shocked and devastated to learn about the flight crash in Ahmedabad. We are on highest alert. I am personally monitoring the situation and have directed all aviation and emergency response agencies to take swift and coordinated action. Rescue teams have been mobilised, and all efforts are being made to ensure medical aid and relief support are being rushed to the site..."
