Visuals from the scene showed thick plumes of smoke rising from the runway area, with seven fire engines deployed immediately to control the situation.
According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the aircraft took off from runway 23 at 1:39 PM IST and issued a MAYDAY call shortly after. However, it failed to respond to subsequent attempts by air traffic control to re-establish contact. Eyewitnesses and visuals from the scene showed thick black smoke billowing from the crash site, prompting a massive emergency response.
The pilot in command, Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, had over 8,200 hours of flying experience, while First Officer Clive Kundar had logged 1,100 hours. Three teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), comprising 90 personnel, were deployed from Gandhinagar, with three more teams being rushed in from Vadodara to aid in rescue efforts.
