A 60-year-old woman suffered a fatal heart attack while waiting for medical attention at the emergency ward of Mainpuri district hospital on Tuesday. It was alleged that the on-duty doctor remained glued to his mobile phone, watching reels.
The incident sparked outrage after CCTV footage of Dr Adarsh Sanger’s inaction and his subsequent slapping of the victim’s son went viral on social media.
The deceased, Pravesh Kumari, was brought to the hospital around noon by her family, who claimed that precious time was wasted due to the doctor’s negligence. Despite their repeated pleas for immediate medical intervention, the doctor allegedly asked a nurse to handle the situation instead of attending to the patient personally. Witnesses say he did not get up from his seat and kept watching his phone while the woman’s condition deteriorated.
As Kumari’s condition worsened, her son, Guru Sharan Singh, protested, allegedly provoking the doctor, who then slapped Singh, leading to chaos in the hospital.
Soon after, police were called to defuse the situation, reported the Times of India.
The CCTV footage purportedly shows the doctor sitting at his desk and looking at his phone while nurses attended to the patient. The doctor’s slapping of the deceased’s son can also be seen in the same footage. The video has since been widely circulated, leading to outrage and anger.
Guru Sharan Singh said that he and his brothers brought their mother to the emergency ward and placed her on a stretcher, expecting immediate medical attention. Instead, the doctor merely issued instructions to the nurse and compounder while remaining seated.
Singh claimed that the doctor treated his mother’s case as a minor ailment.
The deceased’s sons rubbed her arms and feet to revive her. However, as minutes passed without intervention, blood began to come out of her mouth. Only then did the doctor get up from his seat, but instead of attending Kumari, he lashed out and slapped her son.
Chief Medical Superintendent Dr Madan Lal confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the matter. He said strict action would be taken if the doctor was found guilty. The case has been reported to higher authorities, and further inquiries are underway.
