The United States Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, met Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on Sunday and held detailed discussions on several facets of the India-US ties.
She arrived in India as part of a multi-national tour of the Indo-Pacific. During her trip, she is also expected to meet the top government officials, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi – which will be her second meeting with him since her confirmation as the DNI.
Gabbard will also deliver a keynote address and take part in a Q&A session at the Raisina Dialogue – India’s flagship conference on geopolitics – on March 18.
According to PTI, top sources said Gabbard and Doval had a 'good discussion'.
She earlier said that her visit to the region aims to strengthen relationships.
“I am wheels up on a multi-nation trip to the Indo-Pacific, a region I know very well, having grown up as a child of the Pacific. I’ll be going to Japan, Thailand, and India, with a brief stop in France enroute back to DC,” Gabbard posted on X.
This is her first visit to India since assuming charge as DNI in the second Trump administration.
In February this year, PM Modi had met Gabbard in Washington DC during his visit to the US.
“Met USA’s Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, in Washington DC. Congratulated her on her confirmation. Discussed various aspects of the India-USA friendship, of which she’s always been a strong votary,” PM Modi had posted on X.
According to reports, Canadian spy chief Daniel Rodgers also attended the conference. The visit of Rogers, the head of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), to India comes amid strained relations between the two countries over the Hardeep Singh Nijjar case.
The deliberations were held behind closed doors and there was no official word on them. However, it is understood that ways to enhance intelligence-sharing to combat terrorism and various transnational crimes figured at the conclave, according to PTI.
Intelligence chiefs of Australia, Germany, New Zealand and several other friendly countries of India were learnt to have attended the conclave. Gabbard is visiting India as part of a multi-nation tour of Japan, Thailand and France.
