Tresind Studio, an Indian restaurant in Dubai, was awarded three Michelin stars on Thursday night, making it the only Indian restaurant in the world to win 3 Michelin stars.
For context, Michelin stars add credibility to a restaurant and chefs prefer it because of good quality, expertise and the trust that the stars add to the place.
Tresind Studio’s success has come as a surprise to many, especially because its chef Himanshu Saini is under 40. It was widely expected that the first restaurant in Dubai to win three stars would be one of the many expensive places that are run by famous European chefs.
An Indian restaurant having any hope of competing with the biggest names in the world to win three Michelin stars was not on a lot of minds.
What do Michelin stars mean?
One Michelin star means that the restaurant is very good. Two stars make it the finest of a region and three stars are only awarded to places that are considered to be the best in the world.
Head of Michelin, Gwendal Poullennec, said that the "time is right for the recognition of Indian food on the world stage". Indian restaurants being awarded Michelin stars is no longer a rare thing. In recent years, Michelin has awarded stars to Indian restaurants all over the world.
Poullennec had especially gone to Dubai to make the historic announcement and Saini and his team were informed of it two days before it was made public. Sinin and his team were made to sign Non-Disclosure Agreements and the announcement was kept a secret till the formal reveal was made public.
Reports said that Saini went numb on hearing that he and his team had made culinary history. The team members rejoiced and hugged each other while Saini held his emotions together to make a short speech in front of them.
