Tejashwi Yadav hits back at PM Modi, alleges “double standards” in mother abuse row

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav on Tuesday hit back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the ongoing “mother abuse” row, accusing him of “double standards” and selectively invoking respect for women while ignoring past remarks made against political opponents.

Yadav’s sharp response came after the Prime Minister, addressing a rally in Bihar, said his late mother had been “insulted” from the stage of an RJD-Congress event in Darbhanga. Modi had described the alleged remarks as an attack on “all mothers, sisters and daughters of the country.”

Countering the charge, the Bihar Leader of Opposition cited controversial comments made in the past, including the “50 crore girlfriend” jibe directed at Congress leader Sonia Gandhi’s family and the “Jersey cow” remark.

“If Modi calls someone’s mother a ‘50 crore girlfriend,’ then bravo, Modi, bravo! If Modi refers to the wife of a martyred Prime Minister and mother of the Leader of the Opposition as a ‘widow’ or a ‘Jersey cow,’ shameless people say Modi gave a brilliant speech,” Yadav wrote on X.

He also referred to Modi’s 2015 “DNA” comment against Nitish Kumar, now his ally and Bihar’s Chief Minister. “If the Prime Minister questions Nitish Kumar’s origins by saying his DNA is faulty, meaning his blood is impure, is that justified? Did the report from the nails and hair sent to the PMO ever come back?” Yadav asked sarcastically.

The RJD leader further accused Modi of campaigning for Karnataka MP Prajwal Revanna, who faces charges of sexually assaulting women. “If the Prime Minister appeals for the victory of a rape accused, that is hailed as a masterstroke,” he said.

Expanding his attack, Yadav alleged Modi remained silent when Biharis were targeted in Gujarat and during other national crises.

“Thousands of farmers died in the protests, workers walked miles in the lockdown, youth are unemployed, soldiers were martyred in Pulwama, Pahalgam and Galwan. Yet he didn’t cry. But today he wants sympathy by invoking his mother,” he said.

The controversy began after a video went viral purportedly showing abuses directed at Modi and his late mother from the stage of Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ in Darbhanga. The Prime Minister later said such language had “deeply hurt” him as well as the people of Bihar.
