Voting for the 234-member Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly will be held in a single phase on April 23, the Election Commission said on Sunday.
The counting of votes will take place on May 4. The ruling DMK-led alliance will seek to retain power, while the opposition AIADMK aims for a comeback. Meanwhile, the BJP is attempting to expand its influence in a state historically dominated by Dravidian parties.
MK Stalin (DMK)
Chief Minister and DMK president MK Stalin is the central figure in this election. After leading the DMK to power in 2021, Stalin is seeking another mandate based on his government’s welfare initiatives, governance record and development projects.
Schemes such as expanded social welfare benefits, infrastructure investments, and programmes aimed at improving education and healthcare have been central to the DMK government’s narrative.
The election will test whether the DMK’s governance model continues to resonate with voters.
Edappadi K Palaniswami (AIADMK)
Former Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, often referred to as EPS, will lead the AIADMK’s challenge to the ruling DMK. The party is seeking to regain power by mobilising its traditional support base and highlighting issues such as inflation, unemployment and governance concerns.
The election will also be a leadership test for Palaniswami as he attempts to firmly establish himself as the dominant leader within the AIADMK after the death of former party chief J Jayalalithaa.
NDA’s attempts
The BJP is striving to expand its political footprint in Tamil Nadu, where national parties have historically struggled against strong regional forces. The party hopes to increase its vote share and convert it into more Assembly seats.
Leaders such as K Annamalai have been attempting to strengthen the party’s organisational base and appeal to new voter segments, particularly young voters and urban constituencies.
Vijay (Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam)
Actor-turned-politician Vijay, founder of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is emerging as a new political challenger in Tamil Nadu. After officially launching his party in 2024, Vijay has positioned himself as an alternative to the traditional Dravidian parties.
The 2026 Assembly election will be the first major electoral test for Vijay’s political ambitions. His popularity among younger voters and fans could translate into a new voter base, potentially influencing the electoral dynamics in several constituencies.
With welfare politics and questions of regional identity likely to shape the campaign, the Tamil Nadu Assembly election is set to be one of the most closely watched political contests this year.
