Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu will be held in a phase on April 23, the Election Commission of India announced on Sunday, with counting set to take place on May 4.
The 2026 election is primarily expected to be a contest between the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led Secular Progressive Alliance and the opposition All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)-led alliance backed by the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Newer players such as actor Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) are contesting independently and could queer the political pich in the state.
What happened in the 2021 Assembly election?
The 2021 election to the 16th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly took place on April 6, with polling conducted across all 234 Assembly constituencies.
It was held amid Covid-19 restrictions and resulted in a decisive victory for the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led Secular Progressive Alliance, ending the decade-long rule of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. MK Stalin took oath as the chief minister, carrying forward his father M Karunanidhi's political legacy.
Polling remained largely peaceful with a turnout of 73.63 per cent, and the results were announced on May 2. The DMK benefited from strong anti-incumbency against the AIADMK, impressive performance in urban constituencies, and effective alliance coordination. MK Stalin was sworn in as chief minister on May 7, leading the DMK’s sixth government and its first absolute majority in 25 years.
The AIADMK, which contested as part of the National Democratic Alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party, retained pockets of support in western Tamil Nadu but faced internal factional tensions after the defeat.

Key issues set to dominate the political landscape:
Anti-incumbency and corruption: The ruling DMK is expected to face criticism from opposition parties, including the AIADMK and the BJP, over alleged corruption, governance concerns, and accusations of dynastic politics.
Youth unemployment and welfare politics: Rising youth unemployment and economic pressures may dominate the campaign, with parties promising welfare schemes such as subsidies, loan waivers, and cash transfers despite fiscal constraints.

| Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) (led by DMK) | 159 | 45.38% |
| National Democratic Alliance (NDA) (led by AIADMK) | 75 | 39.72% |
| Others/Independents | 0 | 14.9% |
Dravidian identity vs new entrants: Traditional Dravidian parties will emphasise regional identity and federal rights, while newer players like Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) aim to attract younger voters with narratives centred on Tamil pride and anti-corruption politics.
