The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought responses from states on petitions challenging anti-conversion laws, granting them four weeks to respond.
The petitioners have claimed that the laws were being used to harass interreligious couples and restrict religious observances, according to a report by ANI.
The bench was hearing the batch of petitions challenging the constitutionality of laws in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand and Karnataka dealing with religious conversions, Live Law reported.
A bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran sought the response of various State governments to pleas challenging anti-conversion laws within a period of four weeks.
The apex court has listed the matter to be heard next in six weeks.
