The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday launched a sharp attack at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi after he claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is “frightened” of US President Donald Trump.
Taking to X, BJP’s national spokesperson CR Kesavan said “for Rahul Gandhi and the Congress Party, India’s national interest has never been and will never be a priority nor concern".
The BJP leader’s comments came shortly after Gandhi alleged that PM Modi allowed Trump to "decide and announce" that India will not buy Russian oil and "keeps sending congratulatory messages despite repeated snubs".
"PM Modi is frightened of Trump. 1. Allows Trump to decide and announce that India will not buy Russian oil. 2. Keeps sending congratulatory messages despite repeated snubs. 3. Cancelled the Finance Minister's visit to America. 4. Skipped Sharm el-Sheikh. 5. Doesn't contradict him on Operation Sindoor," Gandhi said on X.
What BJP leaders said?
Reminding the Congress and Gandhis of their “sordid track record of meekly surrendering Indian interests to pressure of foreign powers", Kesavan cited the example of a “senior Congress leader in the context of 2008 Mumbai terror attacks".
Recently, former home minister P Chidambaram in an interview had admitted that the then UPA government decided to not retaliate against Pakistan after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks due to international pressure, including the United States.
“It was the Congress led UPA Government in 2009 which dishonourably compromised India’s national interest in Sharm el-Sheikh peddling Pakistan’s propaganda on Balochistan," Kesavan added.
“Despite categorical press statements by the MEA that United states was told that there was no mention at any stage on subjects like India-US trade deal or mediation, the Congress fake factory is indulging in outright lying,” he stated.
BJP leader Amit Malviya also hit out at Rahul Gandhi over his remarks, noting the past records of the Congress Prime Ministers.
“If Prime Minister Modi were afraid of Donald Trump, then Trump wouldn’t be publicly saying “Modi is a great man” every few days just to get his attention,” he said.
If Prime Minister Modi were afraid of Donald Trump, then Trump wouldn’t be publicly saying “Modi is a great man” every few days just to get his attention. But let’s put that aside and recall what Congress Prime Ministers actually did: 1) Jawaharlal Nehru: Gave up India’s… https://t.co/zbSLR2Lzh6— Amit Malviya (@amitmalviya) October 16, 2025
