Congress MP and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and asked him to expunge the "derogatory" remarks made against him by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs during the ongoing winter session of Parliament.

After the meeting, he spoke to the reporters outside Parliament and said, “I held a meeting with the Speaker. I told him that derogatory comments against me should be expunged. The Speaker said that he would look into it. Our aim is that the House must run and discussion should happen in the House. No matter what they say about me, we want that there should be a debate on 13th December"

He alleged that BJP does not want to discuss crucial issues like the Adani bribery charges in Parliament. "They don’t want a discussion on Adani. In the end, we will not leave this. They will keep levelling allegations on us, but the House must function,” he said.

Earlier today, deputy LoP Gaurav Gogoi wrote a letter to Speaker Birla and urged him to expunge certain words of BJP member Nishikant Dubey from the records of Parliament.

On December 5, BJP MPs Nishikant Dubey and Sambit Patra targeted Rahul over the allegations mounted by Congress.

Dubey alleged links between the Leader of Opposition and Hungarian-American billionaire George Soros. Referring to the Soros and the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), Dubey said, “Congress ka haath, Soros ke saath.” He questioned him saying, “Did Rahul Gandhi take money from George Soros for the Bharat Jodo Yatra?”

Dubey made the remarks during a discussion in the lower house. The remarks cause a major uproar in Parliament, leading to an adjournment of proceedings.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha witnessed chaos throughout Wednesday with protests by opposition members causing frequent disruptions. The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day.
