Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed condolences over the loss of lives in the tragic Bengaluru stampede. According to reports, the stampede that occurred near Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium claimed 11 lives and left dozens injured.
“The mishap in Bengaluru is absolutely heartrending. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that those who are injured have a speedy recovery,” Prime Minister’s Office wrote on X.
The entire Bengaluru erupted in celebration after Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) clinched their maiden IPL title by defeating Punjab Kings, ending an 18-year wait. The entire team arrived in Bengaluru from Ahmedabad to celebrate their historic win. However, the joyous environment turned tragic when a stampede broke out near the stadium where the team was to be felicitated.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that the pain of the tragedy erased the joy of victory and urged people to prioritise safety above everything else. "May the souls of the deceased rest in peace and may those injured and those undergoing treatment in the hospital recover as soon as possible. My condolences to the bereaved families who have lost their loved ones," he said in a post on X.
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar also appealed to the public to remain calm and not panic after the tragic stampede. In an X post, he further expressed condolences for the tragedy, which occurred during celebrations for RCB's IPL victory celebrations.
He wrote, "People who were supposed to witness RCB's IPL victory celebrations. The tragedy and death have brought deep pain and shock. My condolences to the deceased. My condolences to their family. Let there be pride, but not bigger than life. I appeal to everyone to please stay safe."
