Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday spoke to Chief Justice of India (CJI) B R Gavai to condemn a lawyer’s attempt to hurl a shoe at him inside the Supreme Court, saying the incident had “angered every Indian.”

“There is no place for such reprehensible acts in our society,” the Prime Minister said, lauding Justice Gavai for maintaining composure following the attack.

In a post on X, PM Modi wrote, “Spoke to Chief Justice of India, Justice B R Gavai Ji. The attack on him earlier today in the Supreme Court premises has angered every Indian. There is no place for such reprehensible acts in our society. It is utterly condemnable.”

“I appreciated the calm displayed by Justice Gavai in the face of such a situation. It highlights his commitment to values of justice and strengthening the spirit of our Constitution,” he added.

In what is being described as a serious security breach, a 71-year-old lawyer allegedly tried to hurl a shoe towards CJI Gavai in his courtroom on Monday. The Bar Council of India suspended the lawyer’s licence with immediate effect.

According to police sources, a note recovered from the lawyer’s possession contained the slogan, “Sanatan dharma ka apmaan nahi sahega Hindustan” (India will not tolerate insults to Sanatan Dharma).

Despite the disruption, CJI Gavai remained unperturbed and directed court officials to ignore the incident. He instructed that the lawyer, identified as Rakesh Kishore, be let off with a warning.
