The tourism sector in Jammu and Kashmir has been massively impacted

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday chaired a key meeting in Delhi to review the progress in India’s tourism sector.

The development comes amid the government’s increased focus on the tourism sector days after the heinous terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives. In light of the tragedy, several people from across the country cancelled their plans to visit Jammu and Kashmir.

Tourism impacted in J&K

The tourism sector in Jammu and Kashmir has been massively impacted after the recent military conflict between India and Kashmir, following Indian Army’s Operation Sindoor against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in response to Pahalgam terror attack on April 22.

Following the Indian action, Pakistan attempted to attack Indian military bases on May 8, 9 and 10. The Indian forces launched a fierce counter-attack on several Pakistani military installations.

The Chamber of Tourism, Trade and Industry Katra (CTTIK) said the abrupt drop in tourist arrivals has created an economic void across multiple sectors linked directly and indirectly to tourism, requesting chief minister Omar Abdullah to announce a comprehensive relief package, according to a PTI report.

At an extraordinary meeting, the CTTIK adopted a resolution moved by its president Raj Kumar Padha denouncing the Pahalgam terror attack and expressing deep admiration for the valour and courage displayed by the Indian forces during the recent operation Sindoor.

“The tourism industry remains the backbone of Jammu and Kashmir's economy, contributing significantly to employment, trade, and overall economic activity. However, the industry is also the most vulnerable to disruptions, being the first to suffer and the last to recover in the event of any disturbance,” the resolution said.
