The Press Information Bureau’s (PIB) fact-check unit on Friday dismissed reports claiming that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has planned to distribute vermilion (sindoor) to women as part of a nationwide campaign marking the Modi government’s anniversary.
The reports surfaced shortly after the BJP announced a large-scale outreach drive starting on June 9, the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi took oath for his third term to highlight the NDA government’s key achievements over the past 11 years.
In a post on X, PIB fact check said, “Some social media posts and media reports are claiming various decisions to mark the anniversary of Modi 3.0. The claim is fake."

BJP is yet to officially disclose its full campaign agenda but party leaders have indicated that the campaign will include padyatras by Union ministers and MPs.
The campaign will highlight milestones such as Operation Sindoor and government’s stance on the caste census.
Even before the PIB clarification, the BJP had dismissed the vermilion distribution story as baseless. BJP MP from Puri, Sambit Patra, said that the report are “fake news” and accused the opposition of deliberately spreading misinformation.
Patra claimed the opposition was using the false narrative to undermine Operation Sindoor and politicize India’s national security efforts. “This is a shameful attempt to distort facts and belittle the country’s military actions against terrorism,” he said.
Mamata Banerjee Slams Modi Government
The controversy drew sharp reactions from political rivals. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, responding to the alleged plan, took a swipe at the Prime Minister.
“Every woman has her dignity. Sindoor is accepted only from one’s husband… You are not the husband of everybody. Why don’t you start by giving sindoor to your own wife first?” Banerjee said during a public address.
