Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday condemned the attack on BJP MP Khagen Murmu and party MLA Dr Shankar Ghosh in West Bengal, calling it “outright appalling” and evidence of the state’s “pathetic law and order situation.”
Murmu and Ghosh were reportedly assaulted while distributing relief materials to flood-affected communities in Jalpaiguri’s Nagrakata area. The two leaders were on the ground assisting residents hit by torrential rains, landslides, and flash floods when a mob allegedly pelted stones at them, leaving Murmu injured.
“The manner in which our party colleagues, including a sitting MP and MLA, were attacked in West Bengal for serving the people affected by floods and landslides is outright appalling,” Modi said in a post on X. “It highlights the insensitivity of the TMC as well as the absolutely pathetic law and order situation in the state.”

‘TMC must focus on relief, not violence’: Modi
Taking direct aim at the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, the Prime Minister said, “I wish the West Bengal Government and TMC were more focused on helping people rather than indulging in violence in such a challenging situation.”
He urged BJP workers to continue their relief efforts despite the attack. “I call upon BJP karyakartas to continue working among the people and assist the ongoing rescue operations,” Modi said.
BJP blames TMC, calls it ‘Jungle Raj’
BJP leaders have accused TMC supporters of orchestrating the assault.
“TMC’s Jungle Raj in Bengal! BJP MP Khagen Murmu, a respected tribal leader and two-time MP from North Malda, was attacked by TMC goons while on his way to help with relief and rescue efforts,” BJP spokesperson Amit Malviya said in a post on X.
Malviya alleged that the state administration had been absent from relief work. “While Mamata Banerjee dances at her Kolkata Carnival, the TMC and state administration are missing in action. Those actually helping people, BJP leaders and karyakartas, are being attacked for doing relief work. This is TMC’s Bengal, where cruelty rules and compassion is punished,” he wrote.
TMC denies role, blames BJP for provocation
Reacting to the allegations, a TMC leader and Minister of North Bengal Development claimed that those who attacked “did not carry any flag.”
He said, “The BJP tried to instigate people against Mamata Banerjee; those people have now reacted against them.”
The minister denied that the attack was politically motivated and suggested that local tensions were being exploited for political mileage.
