Partaking in News 18 Rising Bharat Summit, Congress leader Sachin Pilot said Congress leaders who lacked the gumption for a fight switched sides in recent years. Answering a question on why several talented leaders have left the grand old party in recent times, Pilot said it may have happened due to personal compulsions and due to a lack of spirit to put up a spirited fight against the BJP.
“People who are committed to party’s ideology, will remain with the party. Our workers and leaders will voice the issue and make the government accountable," Pilot said.
On reservations and the issue if merit, Sachin Pilot said that there should be a level-playing field so that every aspect of Indian society can benefit from development.
Pilot was asked how Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi talks about caste-based reservation, but what will happen to merit then? Pilot said he agrees that “we need to have merit-based system in the country. But on the flip-side, there are people who have not been able to enter the mainstream”.
He said India needs competition based merit system, and is targeted to those who deserve it. "50 per cent based quota system is arbitrary not based on actionable data", Pilot said.
“We must have a headcount of social and economic background of people. We need to understand which section of our society needs help. Let us have merit-based system. Let us not be bound by history and legacy… there should be a scientific process (in place),” Pilot said.
When asked if the reservation can be increased beyond 50%, Pilot said if one can make supplies abundant, there will not be a problem. “I am asking for level-playing field. We need to have a balance,” he added.
