Nipah virus: One more confirmed case in Kerala's Kozhikode, contact list nears 1,000 | Latest updates

Nipah virus in Kerala: One more Nipah virus case was confirmed in Kozhikode today.  The sample of a 39-year-old man tested positive, he is at present under observation in a private hospital.

This takes the total number Nipah virus cases to six, and the active cases stand at four after two people died due to the infection.

Here's what we know so far

-- A team of officials from Delhi will be visiting Maruthonkara and Ayancheri, two of the 7 areas in Kerala's Kozhikode district, where two people have died due to Nipah infection.

-- Kerala Health Department found 51 more people with fever in the containment zones

--- The number of people on the contact list has increased to 950, with 213 of them considered high-risk. The contact list has 287 health workers

-- Rajasthan has directed medical officials to remain 'alert' regarding any Nipah outbreak in the wake of cases being reported from Kozhikode

-- 11 samples sent for testing in Kozhikode returned negative results for the virus.

-- ICMR's mBSL-3, the first Biosafety Level-3 containment mobile laboratory in south Asia, is helping in the early detection of the infection cause by Nipah virus

-- A 19-member core committee, call centres and a control centre have been set up in Kozhikode, along with isolation, ventilator and ICU facilities

-- Offices told to work from home and public parks and beaches in the containment zones have been shut

-- Visitors are not allowed in hospitals and private functions curtailed

-- Travel to containment zones banned

-- Karnataka has enhanced surveillance in its border districts.

-- All bordering states are inspecting goods vehicles entering the districts and checking for fruits. Hospitals, primary health centres on standby
