Lakhisarai, the administrative headquarters of its namesake district, has long been a politically vibrant constituency. Carved out of Munger district in 1994, it is one of six Assembly segments under the Munger Lok Sabha seat and has witnessed 11 Assembly elections since its creation in 1977. Over the years, the seat has alternated between parties such as the Janata Party, Congress, Janata Dal United (JD(U)), and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), though the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged as the dominant force, securing victory five times. The constituency, marked by its mix of Other Backward Classes (OBC), Extremely Backward Classes (EBC), upper caste, and Muslim voters, remains one of Bihar’s most politically aware regions.
Key candidates
The 2025 Bihar Assembly elections have turned the spotlight back on Lakhisarai, where Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha of the BJP faces a keen contest. “This is the home ground of Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha, a senior BJP leader and the current Speaker of the Bihar Assembly,” reported ANI. Sinha, a prominent Bhumihar leader, is eyeing a fourth consecutive win since first capturing the seat in 2010. His main challenger this time is Suraj Kumar of the Jan Suraaj Party (JSP), joined by Congress candidate Amaresh Kumar and Janshakti Janta Dal’s Sukhdev Yadav -- both of whom aim to harness anti-incumbency sentiment and address local employment and mining issues. For the BJP, this battle carries symbolic weight -- a test of the party’s reach in rural Bihar amid attacks from the opposition over unemployment and governance.
What happened in 2015 and 2020 elections?
In the 2010 Assembly elections, the BJP registered a strong performance in Lakhisarai with a comfortable margin of 41.5 percent, asserting its growing influence in the Munger region. However, the subsequent elections saw tighter contests. In 2015, Vijay Kumar Sinha won with 75,901 votes, securing a vote share of 40.79 percent and defeating JD(U)’s Ramanand Mandal, who polled 69,345 votes (37.27 percent). Sinha’s margin then stood at 6,556 votes (3.61 percent). The 2020 polls saw a similar outcome, though with a reduced edge. Sinha, representing the BJP, obtained 38.2 percent of the vote, defeating INC’s Aman Raj, who received 63,729 votes (32.8 percent). Independent candidate Sujeet Kumar followed with 11,570 votes (5.96 percent).
According to Election Commission data, Lakhisarai had 368,106 registered voters in 2020, including 196,927 men, 171,168 women, and 11 belonging to the third gender, alongside 1,575 postal votes and 1,106 service voters.
