Kerala will vote on 9 April in a single phase, the Election Commission announced on Saturday. The counting of votes will take place on 4 May.
The 2026 election to the Kerala Legislative Assembly is expected to be a close contest between the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by Pinarayi Vijayan, and the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF), led by Congress.
While the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the Bharatiya Janata Party is attempting to expand its footprint and emerge as a significant third force, Kerala’s electoral battle continues to largely revolve around the traditional LDF–UDF rivalry.

What happened in the 2021 Assembly election?
The current term of the Kerala Legislative Assembly will conclude on May 23, 2026, while the last Assembly elections took place in April 2021.
The April 6, 2021 elections to the Kerala Legislative Assembly saw a voter turnout of roughly 74 per cent. The ruling Left Democratic Front, led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), achieved a landmark re-election, ending the state’s decades-old trend of alternating governments and becoming the first alliance since 1982 to retain power.
The government’s Covid-19 response, welfare programmes such as enhancements to the public distribution system and robust cadre mobilisation were seen as key factors behind the win.
| Alliance/Party | Seats Won | Vote Share |
| Left Democratic Front (LDF) (CPI(M)-led) | 99 | 45.43% |
| United Democratic Front (UDF) (Congress-led) | 41 | 9.47% |
| National Democratic Alliance (NDA) (BJP-led) | 0 | 12.36% |
Pinarayi Vijayan, after the polls, became the first chief minister of Kerala to be re-elected after finishing a full, five-year term in office.
Key issues set to dominate the political landscape:
* Several issues are expected to shape the political landscape in Kerala ahead of the next election to the Kerala Legislative Assembly, ranging from economic pressures and governance concerns to social polarisation and debates over development.
* Economic distress is likely to be a key electoral issue. Rising unemployment, inflation, and mounting fiscal stress have become major talking points in the state. The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) has blamed the Union government for restricting borrowing limits and reducing financial support, while highlighting its welfare programmes. The opposition United Democratic Front (UDF), however, has accused the government of financial mismanagement and corruption.
* Anti-incumbency could also emerge as a significant factor after nearly a decade of LDF rule under CM Pinarayi Vijayan.
* At the same time, social and communal dynamics are increasingly influencing politics in the state. The BJP has expanded its vote share in recent years, challenging Kerala’s traditionally bipolar political contest between the LDF and UDF.
* Development and welfare policies are also expected to dominate the campaign narrative.
