Karnataka is planning to introduce a 'Suspended String Rail Transport System' at Gokak waterfalls in Belagavi to enhance tourism.
Karnataka Tourism Infrastructure Limited (KTIL) has recently invited a tender to select a consultant for preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project.
A suspended string transport system is an advanced elevated rail network in which lightweight, high-strength string rails support passenger/cargo vehicles.

“The consultant will assess innovative smart mobility solutions and develop a sustainable, safe, and green transport system connecting Gokak waterfalls” a senior KTIL official told Moneycontrol.
The project includes ancillary infrastructure such as food and beverage outlets, ticketing counters, and retail areas to generate additional revenue. The DPR will also evaluate ridership demand, alternative alignments, and system options, along with conducting a topographic survey of the final alignment.
The study will assess suitable locations and land requirements for stations, integration with nearby transport hubs, and estimate project costs.
“A traffic study will be conducted to forecast ridership demand until 2060, considering land use, development plans, and commuter preferences”, the official said.
The consultant will also carry out topographic and geotechnical surveys, identifying environmental and social impacts. This includes an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to ensure compliance with regulations, evaluate greenhouse gas reductions, and assess the project’s ecological footprint.

“A Social Impact Assessment (SIA) will examine the impact on affected populations, infrastructure, and local businesses. It will include surveys on land use, ownership status, and potential displacement. Gender and poverty analysis will also be conducted to address employment and safety concerns”, the official said.
DPR will also cover system design, including station planning, intermodal integration, signalling, power supply, and maintenance infrastructure.
“The plan will propose an optimal fare structure and assess financial viability through cost estimation, operation and maintenance expenses, and potential non-fare revenue sources”, the official said.

Gokak falls, a major tourist attraction in Karnataka, plunges 52 metres over a 177-metre-wide cliff. A 200-metre suspension bridge offers panoramic views, especially stunning during the monsoon season. Gokak is also home to architectural marvels from the Chalukya era, including Durga, Shanmukha, and Mahalingeshwara temples.
“The proposed transport system aims to enhance accessibility while preserving the region’s ecological and cultural heritage”, the official adds.
