The Jharkhand government will participate in the Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos later this month for the first time, as the State looks to position itself before global investors and institutions at a key moment in its development journey, according to The Hindu.
Chief Minister Hemant Soren will lead an 11-member delegation from January 18 to 26. The visit coincides with 25 years of Jharkhand’s statehood and marks the State’s maiden participation at the WEF.
A signal of global ambition
A senior official at the Chief Minister’s residence told The Hindu that the Davos engagement reflects Jharkhand’s intent to step onto global platforms as it enters a new phase of long-term economic planning.
Jharkhand’s participation will be anchored in the theme “Growth in Harmony with Nature”, which the official said aligns with the WEF’s 2026 focus on sustainable growth, resilience, trust and long-term economic transformation.
What Jharkhand plans to pitch
According to the official, the State delegation will take part in State-led thematic sessions, structured dialogues and official interactions at the India Pavilion and other WEF platforms.
The discussions will focus on investment promotion, responsible resource governance, sustainable industrial development, critical minerals, energy transition and long-term regional growth, while underlining the role of sub-national governments in inclusive economic models.
Jharkhand’s outreach is notable as mineral-rich states increasingly seek foreign capital and technology partnerships amid India’s push on energy transition and domestic manufacturing.
UK visit after Davos
Following the Davos meetings, the Chief Minister-led delegation will travel to the United Kingdom for investment and institutional engagements.
As part of the UK leg, Soren will deliver a special lecture followed by a Q&A session at the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford, according to the official.
The UK visit will also include policy discussions, academic interactions and engagement with the Indian diaspora, in the context of the evolving India–UK economic partnership.
Investment and jobs focus
Officials told The Hindu that the overarching objective of the international visit is to attract investment, accelerate industrial development and generate employment in Jharkhand.
On January 6, Soren described the Davos and UK visits as significant from an investment and long-term development perspective and directed officials to ensure coordinated representation of the State’s priorities.
An official website, jharkhandatdavos.co.in, has been launched to share updates on the State’s participation, with additional communication planned through official social media channels.
