Vehicles stuck as a portion of the Fourth Tawi Bridge damaged after relentless rainfall, at Bhagwati Nagar, in Jammu on Tuesday.

A portion of the Tawi River bridge in Jammu caved in on Tuesday as relentless rains battered the region, leaving several vehicles stranded on the collapsed section and halting traffic completely.

Terrifying visuals from the site show people frantically trying to rescue those trapped in vehicles before the bridge gave way, with some cars dangerously close to being swept away.

This comes hours after India alerted Pakistan about a potential flood in the Tawi River, even as the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) remains in abeyance following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Pakistani authorities have issued warnings based on information provided by India, according to The News.

Jammu Deputy Inspector General of Police Shiv Kumar Sharma said, “A flood alert has been sounded. The Administration has appealed to the public to avoid going near rivers and nallahs. Traffic is operating on the highway, and all measures are being taken to ensure people’s safety.”

The incessant downpour continues to disrupt normal life across the union territory for the fourth day today.

Traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar and Kishtwar-Doda national highways has been suspended, and several hill roads are blocked or damaged. Nearly all water bodies in the area have overflowed above danger levels, inundating low-lying areas and key roads.

Rail services have been severely impacted, with 18 trains cancelled and several routes suspended due to soil erosion, flash floods, and damaged tracks in areas including the Chakki River, Jammu Tawi, and Bari Brahman sections.

In Doda district, heavy rainfall has triggered flash floods and rising river levels, claiming at least three lives. The Neeru River in Bhaderwah crossed the danger mark, submerging several low-lying areas. A cloudburst further intensified the situation, leading to large-scale rescue and relief operations.

Meanwhile, rising waters of the Chenab River has also put the Pul Doda bridge, a lifeline connecting Doda to the Batote-Kishtwar National Highway, under severe threat.

Road connectivity across Doda and other districts have been severely disrupted due to landslides and falling boulders, leaving many villages isolated. Authorities have deployed vehicles with loudspeakers to warn residents and urged them to stay indoors.

The floods in Jammu and Kashmir have killed at least 30 people so far, including six in a landslide en route to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine and four in separate incidents in Doda district.

The Meteorological Department has forecast very heavy rainfall in the Jammu division over the next 40 hours, with river levels at the alert mark.
