Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has announced an ex-gratia of ₹6 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives in the Mata Vaishno Devi landslide and other flood-related incidents over the past two days in Jammu and Kashmir. Of this, Rs 4 lakh will come from the SDRF and Rs 2 lakh from the CM’s Relief Fund. Financial aid of Rs 1 lakh will be provided to those seriously injured, while individuals with minor injuries will receive Rs 50,000. In addition, the Chief Minister has directed the advance release of Rs 10 crore to each Deputy Commissioner to ensure immediate relief, rehabilitation, and restoration measures.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah stated today that he has updated PM Modi on the ground situation.

“I spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and provided him the details about the situation. He assured that all possible assistance would be provided by the Central government,” Abdullah said.

The Chief Minister noted some respite as the rainfall had nearly stopped and water levels in low-lying areas had begun to recede.

He also highlighted infrastructure vulnerabilities, pointing to a bridge that had been damaged previously in 2014.

“The loss due to the disaster is before you. The same section of this bridge was damaged in 2014, which indicates some risk. We will have to ensure such incidents do not happen again. Action will also be needed for houses near the river,” Abdullah said.

He added that relief and rescue operations are already underway to assist affected residents.

Jammu Kashmir Weather News Live: Rains likely to ease today, death toll stands at four; relief ops underway, says Doda official

Doda Deputy Commissioner Harvinder Singh said this afternoon that the rains are expected to ease, with the weather beginning to clear across the district.

Relief operations and efforts to reopen highways have already commenced, with teams deployed in Thathri and other affected areas.

Singh added that landslides have occurred at 4–5 locations along the highway, and restoration work is ongoing. “The highway is expected to be fully restored by evening. The death toll so far stands at four. No further damage is expected to residential or commercial structures,” he said.

The deputy commissioner also confirmed that internet and mobile services will be restored shortly and urged residents to stay away from rivers and other water bodies.

He clarified that while heavy rainfall was recorded, it has not been officially declared a cloudburst by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Schools and colleges in the district are likely to remain closed on Thursday, with final confirmation expected from senior officials.

Jammu Kashmir Weather News Live: Train services resume from Jammu after day-long suspension due to rains

Train services were restored from Jammu today after a day-long suspension caused by torrential rains that lashed the region, officials said.

Six trains that were either cancelled or short-terminated on Tuesday are now scheduled to depart for their destinations.

According to the PRO of Jammu Division, the trains include Jammu Tawi-Kamakhya Express, Jammu-Sambalpur, Jammu-Ambedkar Nagar, Jammu-Varanasi, Jammu-Bandra and Jammu-Chhapra.

On Tuesday, Northern Railway had cancelled 22 incoming and outgoing trains from Jammu and Katra stations, while 27 trains were short-terminated at various points in the division due to waterlogging, landslides and damaged infrastructure.

Of the 22 trains cancelled, nine originated from Katra — the base camp for the Vaishno Devi shrine — and one from Jammu, while the rest were incoming services to Katra, Jammu and Udhampur.

However, rail traffic on the Katra-Srinagar stretch continued without disruption, officials added.

Deputy Commissioner Ramban, Mohammad Alyas Khan, said heavy rainfall over the past two days had pushed the Chenab river above the danger mark, though the water level has now begun to recede.

He appealed to residents to stay away from the riverbanks and small sewers, adding that people living in low-lying areas have been evacuated to safer locations.

Khan further said that landslides are being reported along the highway, which is under inspection, and advised people to avoid travelling on it for the time being.

“The administration is on high alert, and all our teams, along with the SDRF, are fully active. We have also circulated control room numbers for public assistance,” he said.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh issued an update on the prevailing flood situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

He has outlined the key  developments and precautionary measures taken by the administration.

According to Singh, rainfall continues across the Jammu division, except in Poonch and Rajouri districts, though the intensity has reduced.

While the River Tawi’s water level has receded, the River Chenab remains close to the danger mark.

He said that the immediate priority for the administration is the restoration of electricity, water supply, and mobile services, with teams working round the clock.

Rescue and relief operations are being carried out in close coordination by the SDRF, NDRF, paramilitary forces, Army and Air Force.

Educational institutions across affected districts have been ordered to remain closed, and the public has been advised to avoid non-essential movement for their safety.

Traffic movement on the historic Madhopur bridge has been suspended since early Wednesday morning. Singh recalled its significance, noting that it was the site of Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee’s arrest on May 11, 1953.

He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is personally monitoring the situation and receiving regular updates.

In the meantime, helpline numbers have been issued by the administration for each district to assist people in distress.

Teams from the administration, police, NDRF, SDRF, the Army, and local volunteers are engaged in evacuation and relief efforts in the worst-hit areas, with parallel work underway to restore critical infrastructure and essential services, they said.

Authorities said the top priority is to move residents from vulnerable pockets to safer locations while ensuring food, clean water, and medical care at temporary shelters.

Relief camps have been set up at multiple locations, with the Youth Hostel in Jammu serving as a major shelter.

Community kitchens at Muthi and Satwari are providing meals, while medical teams are stationed at all major relief sites. Restoration of power, water supply, and road connectivity has been taken up on priority, with Tehsildar Nagrota overseeing debris clearance on highways, they said.

The Northern Railway, on Tuesday, cancelled 22 trains and short-terminated 27 others in the Jammu division as heavy rain battered the region, triggering flooding, landslides and damage to infrastructure.

Nine trains from Katra, the base camp for the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, were among those cancelled, while others scheduled to arrive at Katra, Jammu and Udhampur were also called off. One train from Jammu was cancelled as well.

Additionally, train services between Pathankot and Kandrori in Himachal Pradesh were suspended due to flash floods and soil erosion at the Chakki River.

The 27 short-terminated trains were halted at Firozpur, Manda, Chak Rakhwalan and Pathankot.

Train operations, however, remain unaffected on the Katra–Srinagar stretch, railway officials added.

Telecommunication services collapsed in several districts, cutting off millions of residents from contact. Road and rail traffic was badly hit: both the Jammu-Srinagar and Kishtwar-Doda national highways were shut, dozens of hill roads were rendered impassable, and multiple trains were cancelled.
