Jairam Ramesh traces Trump's hardening stance on India after Operation Sindoor: 'Since May 10...'

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Thursday said President Trump's stance towards India continues to harden.

Ahead of the August 1 deadline set by the Donald Trump administration to wrap up agreements with its trading partners, the US President on Wednesday announced 25 percent tariffs “plus a penalty” for India.

In a post on X, Ramesh listed out Trump’s recent stances on India. The Congress leader alleged that since May 10, Trump claimed 30 times that he stopped Operation Sindoor. “He (Trump) made these claims in four different countries. On June 18, he hosted the Pakistan Army Chief and the mastermind of the Pahalgam terrorist attacks for lunch at the White House. On July 30, he imposed a 25% tariff on exports from India to the United States and additional penalties on India's oil and defense purchases from Russia. Additionally, he imposed sanctions on at least six Indian companies accused of having ties with Iran,” said the Congress leader on X.

He also pointed out that after announcing tariff rates for India, Trump also announced that the US would assist Pakistan in the exploration and development of its oil (and gas) reserves. This is separate from the financial assistance he has already secured for Pakistan through the IMF and World Bank.

“Prime Minister Modi used to talk about the TOP challenge regarding the prices of tomatoes, onions, and potatoes in the country. Now India faces the CAP challenge—a political challenge arising from China, America, and Pakistan. PM Modi invested heavily in his personal friendship with President Trump, just as he did earlier with President Xi Jinping. But now both leaders have come to fully understand how they can be swayed through their ego and self-absorbed nature,” said PM Modi.
