India's democratic principles are rooted in its Constitution, says President Droupadi Murmu

To mark the occasion, the government has planned for year-long celebrations.

Kicking off the celebrations marking 75 years of the adoption of India’s Constitution, President Droupadi Murmu, said the country's democratic principles are entrenched in our Constitution and has played a major role in the advancement of the nation.

The President reminded various organs of government to work for the welfare of common citizens. She also urged the judiciary to ensure that principles of justice laid out in the constitution are adhered to.

This year marks 75 years since the adoption of the Constitution, and the Centre will commemorate the occasion with year-long activities under the campaign ‘Hamara Samvidhan, Hamara Swabhiman’

In his address, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said that the Indian Constitution is an instrument of social, political and economic change.

Additionally, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar also reminded the gathering that the basis of India's economic prowess is powered by the vibrancy of Indian Constitution. He went to to say that India's unparalleled development is rooted on the strength of our Constitution.

Calling parliamentarians “guardians of democracy,” VP Dhankhar took to recalling the period of Emergency, during his speech on the occasion of Constitution Day. “June 25 is now said to be celebrated every year, reminding us of the Emergency, the darkest period when fundamental rights of citizens were suspended,” he said.

Earlier in the today, Union Home Minister Amit Shah greeted people on Constitution Day and said the strength of democracy in a huge country like India is its Constitution, which gives the mantra of national unity and integrity.

While the Constitution was adopted on November 26, 1949, it came into effect on January 26, 1950 when India became a republic.

To mark the occasion, the government has planned for year-long celebrations. On Monday (November 25, 2024), the Centre launched a new website -- https: //constitution75.com -- to enable citizens to engage with the legacy of the Constitution.
