US President Donald Trump, late Friday night, once again hailed the leadership of India and Pakistan, claiming their cooperation helped avoid a likely nuclear disaster.
Speaking from the Oval Office alongside Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Trump noted, “We have the greatest leaders in the world, and I want to thank the leaders of India and Pakistan. They understood. They agreed. And the fighting stopped.”
Furthermore, Trump credited his administration, again, with preventing what he described as a near-crisis between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
“We stopped India and Pakistan from fighting. I believe that could have turned into a nuclear disaster,” he remarked.
The US president added that trade discussions played a key role in the de-escalation. “We told them, ‘We can’t trade with people who are shooting at each other and potentially using nuclear weapons.’ They got it,” he said, suggesting that economic pressure helped bring both sides to the table.
Notably, Trump has repeatedly claimed credit for mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, asserting that he played a key role in easing tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
Earlier this month, Trump stated that he encouraged both countries to end their long-standing conflict by promising significant U.S. trade incentives if they ceased hostilities.
Meanwhile, Indian government officials have confirmed that the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) from India and Pakistan have reached a bilateral agreement to immediately halt all hostilities, including firing and military actions on land, air, and sea. Officials emphasized that this truce was negotiated directly between the two countries, without any involvement from third parties.
