  • India offers tariff cuts on some US goods, excluding sensitive farm products.
  • Indian exports like gems, pharma, and seafood to get zero-duty access in the US
  • No concessions on rice, sugar, dairy, and poultry to protect farmers

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Saturday held a press conference to spell out the contours of the interim India-US trade agreement, clarifying sectors where India has offered tariff concessions and those that remain fully protected. He said the framework was designed to expand exports while safeguarding domestic interests, particularly farmers.

Sectors where India has offered concessions

Under the interim framework, India has agreed to provide market access and tariff concessions on select American goods, mainly in non-sensitive categories. These include certain industrial products and limited agricultural and food items, aimed at balancing trade flows and encouraging reciprocal benefits from the US side.

Government sources indicated that the concessions are part of a broader framework under which India could potentially export goods worth up to 300 billion dollars annually to the United States once the agreement is operational.

Zero-duty gains for Indian exports

Goyal said several Indian exports will enjoy zero duty access in the US once the agreement is signed. These include gems and diamonds, generic pharmaceuticals, aircraft parts, machinery parts, elementary auto components and other industrial goods. He added that more Indian exports would gradually be covered under the zero-duty regime.

In agriculture and food processing, items such as spices, coconut, tea, coffee and cashew nuts are also expected to benefit from zero or preferential duties, boosting competitiveness in the US market.

The minister also highlighted gains for the marine sector, noting a sharp rise in seafood exports following improved access to global markets. He said coastal states including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh were witnessing strong sentiment among exporters.

No concessions on sensitive farm and dairy products

Goyal made it clear that India has not offered any concessions in sectors where the country is self-reliant or where domestic livelihoods could be impacted. Crops such as soybean, rice, sugar, jowar, bajra and ragi remain protected, along with dairy products, poultry and other sensitive farm items.

He said the agreement ensures that Indian farmers’ interests are not compromised, even as new export opportunities are opened in other sectors.

Balanced framework

Officials described the interim deal as a calibrated approach that combines trade liberalisation with protection of key domestic sectors. The framework is expected to serve as a stepping stone toward a comprehensive bilateral trade agreement between India and the United States.
