Los Angeles Wildfire News Live: Rain in Southern California helps firefighters but creates risk of toxic ash runoff

After weeks of dry and windy conditions, Southern California finally received rain, providing relief to firefighters battling wildfires.

However, heavy downpours on fire-scorched hillsides could trigger hazardous mudslides and toxic ash runoff.

Los Angeles County crews have been working to stabilise slopes, clear vegetation, and reinforce roads in areas devastated by the Palisades and Eaton fires, which destroyed entire neighborhoods after breaking out on January 7.

The National Weather Service cautioned about the potential for localised cloudbursts, even as most areas are expected to receive around an inch of rain over several days.
