Abhay Singh, popularly known as IIT Baba, refuted claims that he was detained in Jaipur or that he had threatened to commit suicide. He stated that multiple fake news reports are circulating in his name, including false claims about his suicide and detention.
However, he said the only factual aspect in all these reports is that a case has been filed against him for the possession of ganja (marijuana).
According to several reports, IIT Baba, who rose to prominence during the Maha Kumbh Mela, was taken into custody by Jaipur Police following an alleged suicide threat on social media.
A report by India Today revealed that Singh was temporarily held by Jaipur Police for possessing ganja (marijuana), and a case has been registered against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
While speaking to reporters, Singh claimed that it was "prasad" and acknowledged that a case had been filed against him. Speaking to News18 India, ‘IIT Baba’ said, “I smoke cannabis, but I’m not the only one – many sadhus consume it. If the police consider it a crime, so be it".
According to Jaipur Police, ‘IIT Baba’ confessed to using cannabis but was granted bail as the amount in his possession was within legal limits.
Who is Abhay Singh, widely referred to as IIT Baba?A former IIT-Bombay student with a background in aerospace engineering, Singh abandoned a promising career in science to pursue the spiritual path. His academic background came to light during an interview with News18.
Hailing from Haryana, he spent four years at IIT-B, earning an engineering degree. He later diverged from the engineering path, pursuing a masters in design and cultivating a passion for photography. He also shared his expertise by tutoring students in physics.
The IIT Baba told News18 that he delved into philosophical concepts like post-modernism and the works of Socrates and Plato in an attempt to find meaning in life.
