Haryana Police confirmed on Monday that Congress worker Himani Narwal, whose body was discovered in a suitcase, was murdered by a man named Sachin.
Police discovered the body of 22-year-old Himani Narwal stuffed in a suitcase on March 1, ahead of civic polls in the state.
According to the police, Sachin, the accused, is a married man with two children. He had been acquainted with the victim for the past year and a half.
The accused had reportedly visited the victim’s house two days before her body was found and stayed there overnight, CNN-News18 reported citing Haryana Police.
Sachin and Himani had an altercation on February 28, following which he strangled her to death using a mobile charger wire.
“Himani used to stay alone at her residence in Rohtak. The accused used to frequently visit her and also stay there. On February 27, he stayed with Himani at her residence. On February 28, he had a heated altercation with Himani over some monetary dispute after which he strangulated her to death. The accused tied her hands with her stole and then used the mobile charger wire to strangulate her," Krishan Kumar Rao, ADGP, Rohtak Range, was quoted as saying by CNN-News18.
Following the murder, the accused stuffed the victim’s body inside her suitcase.
Police revealed that he then stripped her of the jewellery she was wearing.
Former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda expressed deep shock over the woman’s death in Rohtak.
“The murder in this manner and finding her body in a suitcase is extremely sad and shocking. This in itself is a blot on the law and order of the state. There should be a high-level, impartial investigation into this entire case, and the culprits should receive the harshest punishment as soon as possible,” Hooda said in a statement.
Hooda said that if any such incident occurs against women, the government and the entire law and order system should take exemplary action so that in the future, anyone with criminal tendencies will think a thousand times before committing such an act.
Narwal’s mother Savita, meanwhile, has sought a death penalty for the accused.
"What will happen by meeting the accused? I want the death penalty. No one from the government has contacted us so far," she told ANI.
Earlier, Savita held the election and the party responsible for her daughter's death, suggesting that Himani's rising stature in the party had created enemies for her.
