Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd confirmed Centre’s approval of 97 LCA Mk-1A fighter jets worth Rs 62,000 crore, company informed on August 21.

"We would like to inform that, as communicated by the ministry of defence, Cabinet Committee of Security (CCS) on 19th August, 2025 has approved the proposal for procurement of 97 Light Combat Aircraft Mk-1A along with associated equipment by the ministry of defence, for Indian Air Force from the Company," it said in a statement.

It was reported on August 20 that the Cabinet Committee on Security has cleared the mega defence deal to boost India’s air power.

The stocks of the state-run defence manufacturer was trading flat soon after the market opened with shares 0.16 percent lower at Rs 4,446.4 on the NSE.

The deal is considered to be a major milestone for the jet manufacturer that was preparing for an indigenous Tejas programme to replace India’s MiG-21 fleet.

The LCA Mk-1A is an improved version of the Tejas and has been designed to strengthen the combat capabilities.

Significantly, this is the second big order for the aircraft after HAL secured a contract in February 2021. Deliveries are expected to kick off this year, with six jets scheduled for FY26, following the resolution of earlier engine supply challenges.
