A sub-inspector in Surat, Gujarat, was caught on camera allegedly beating up a boy who drove on to the road meant to be taken as a route by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's convoy in Limbayat. The Prime Minister arrived in Surat earlier today and is expected to address a gathering later this evening.
The incident occurred on Thursday when the police were carrying out a rehearsal to ensure there are no lapses during the movement of the PM's convoy. The policeman, identified as PSI BJ Gadhvi has been transferred to Morbi and his increment put on hold for a year, reports The Indian Express.
A video of the incident that went viral on social media showed the policeman punching the boy on the face, drawing outrage from netizens.
Speaking to the media on Friday, Deputy Commissioner of the Surat police traffic department, Anita Vanani, said the policeman's duty had been changed from the PM's security bandobast to the Surat police control room.
Later, a press note issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Special Branch, Hetal Patel, said that Gadhvi had been sent to Morbi.
"Such behaviour cannot be tolerated and we have written to the Superintendent of Police, Morbi, requesting to stop one-year increment of the PSI," Patel was quoted as saying.
On Friday, the Limbayat police identified the boy and brought him to the police station to record his statement.
As per media report citing police sources, the boy arrived in Surat recently from Nepal and was residing at a relative's home.
