India has welcomed the ceasefire deal announced by Israel and Hamas. The truce, which will come into effect from January 19, will see the critical pause in the conflict that has flattened Gaza in the last 15 months. In a statement released on Thursday, the Ministry of External Affairs welcomed the truce and said that the deal should result in safe and early release of the hostages.

“We welcome the announcement of the agreement for the release of hostages and a ceasefire in Gaza. We hope this lead to safe, sustained supply of humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza. We have consistently called for release of all hostages, ceasefire and return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy,” the MEA said in the statement.
Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani confirmed the development on late Wednesday night. As per the terms agreed in the deal, Hamas will release 33 Israeli hostages. In return, Israel will release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. This is the second such truce that both sides have agreed to since the October 7 attacks in 2023.
Meanwhile, hours after the truce announcement, an AFP report quoting Gaza’s civil defence agency said that at least seven people were killed in fresh Israeli strikes in the Palestinian territory.
