"Yesterday, our national president, Nitin Nabin, approved his joining and today, the sitting MP from Nagaon, Pradyut Bordoloi joined the BJP. We all welcome him into our party," said Sarma who accorded a welcome to the former Congress leader along with BJP Assam president Dilip Saikia.
"As you know, Pradyut Bordoloi is a senior MP, two-time MP from Nagaon Lok Sabha. He was former minister in Congress Cabinet under Tarun Gogoi. As well as, he is an old Congressman, his history with Congress goes back to 1975. So, his joining BJP will definitely strengthen our party," said the Assam CM.
"We are now more confident that we will be able to translate collectively the vision of a Viksit Bharat, Viksit Assam, of Narendra Modi into reality," said Sarma.
On Tuesday, Bordoloi shot a letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, tendering his resignation from the party. A letter signed by him surfaced on Tuesday night, which said “With an overwhelming sense of sadness today, I hereby tender my resignation from all posts, privileges and the primary membership of the Indian National Congress.”
A two-term MP from Nagaon and a multiple-term former minister in Tarun Gogoi-led Congress governments in the state, Bordoloi was one of the most senior leaders in the Assam Congress. He is one of the three Lok Sabha MPs from Assam, the other two being Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi and Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain.
The development comes a month after former Assam Congress president Bhupen Borah quit the party and joined the BJP. Assam is scheduled to hold elections on April 9 to elect 126 members of the state assembly in one phase.
