In an effort to boost security infrastructure at the strategic Lakshadweep Islands, the Indian Navy will commission its new base “INS Jatayu” on March 6 at Minicoy, the southernmost atoll of the archipelago.
The new base, which will effectively be India’s second in Lakshadweep, will help extend New Delhi's "operational surveillance" in the area.
Eye on China: INS Jatayu marks a significant milestone in enhancing security infrastructure at the strategically vital islands. India already has a base in Lakshadweep called INS Dweeprakshak at Kavaratti. Since Lakshadweep is just 130km north of Maldives - which has been cozying up to China - the new base will give further teeth to India’s maritime forces amid new geopolitical challenges.
Geopolitical Significance: Located at Minicoy, INS Jatayu also strategically straddles the vital Sea Lines of Communications (SLOCs). This positioning enhances the Indian Navy's operational capabilities, especially in safeguarding crucial maritime routes amid China’s expansionist behaviour in the Indian Ocean Region.
Combating Piracy: Further, INS Jatayu will strengthen the Indian Navy's operational reach and facilitate efforts in combating piracy and narcotics operations in the Western Arabian Sea, enhancing its position as the first responder. The Navy has already stepped up deployment in the Gulf of Aden, and in the North and Central Arabian Sea off East Coast of Somalia, to counter piracy amid the Red Sea crisis.
Connectivity and Development: INS Jatayu will not only enhance security but also augment connectivity with the mainland. Its commissioning aligns with the Centre’s focus on comprehensive development of island territories, showcasing a commitment to holistic growth.
Capacity Building: With the commissioning of INS Jatayu, the Indian Navy will cement its foothold in Lakshadweep, extending operational surveillance, reach and sustenance. This will further help boslter national security.
