A day after the EV giant opened its first showroom in Mumbai, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday took a test drive of the Tesla car outside the Vidhan Bhavan.

Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik accompanied Shinde as a passenger as they arrived at the Maharashtra Assembly in the electric vehicle.

Calling Tesla's entry in Mumbai a "big deal", Deputy CM Shinde told the media, "It is a big deal that Tesla has opened its showroom in Mumbai. Maharashtra has the highest foreign direct investment (FDI). Maharashtra has good infrastructure... Investors are willing to invest in Maharashtra because the state has become an industry-friendly state..."

Global EV giant Tesla officially made its entry in India on Tuesday with the launch of its first experience centre at the Maker Maxity Commercial Complex in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex.

It entered the world's third-largest automobile market with the launch of its electric Midsize SUV, the Tesla Model Y, priced from nearly Rs 60 lakh.

Currently, the Model Y will be the only model available in the country. It will be offered in two variants; Rear-Wheel Drive, priced at INR 60 lakhs, and Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive, priced at INR 68 lakhs, according to a report by ANI.

This flagship showroom, also referred to as a Tesla Experience Centre, is expected to be followed by more outlets in major metros, including New Delhi.
