Lalu Prasad Yadav’s close aide, Dularchand Yadav, died of cardiorespiratory failure caused by injuries to his heart and lungs, according to the post-mortem report submitted to Patna Police.
Yadav collapsed and died on Thursday while campaigning for the Jan Suraaj Party’s candidate, Piyush Priyadarshi, in Mokama, Patna district. The incident occurred near the Bhadaur and Ghoswari police stations.
“The reason behind Yadav's death is cardiorespiratory failure due to shock caused by injury of the heart and lungs by a hard and blunt substance,” said the report, submitted to the Patna Police.
The autopsy further noted that Yadav had sustained a gunshot wound near his ankle joint, but clarified that the bullet injury was not the cause of his death.
Following the incident, police registered three FIRs and detained two suspects. Officials said investigations are underway to determine how the fatal injuries occurred and to identify those responsible.
Meanwhile, the Station House Officers (SHOs) of both Bhadaur and Ghoswari police stations have been suspended for “dereliction of duty.”
Local strongman and JD(U) candidate from Mokama, Anant Singh, has been named as an accused in one of the FIRs, along with four others. The case was registered based on a complaint filed by Yadav’s grandson.
A second FIR was filed against six individuals on a complaint by the Prashant Kishor-led Jan Suraaj, while a third was registered by the police on the basis of their own inquiry.
Meanwhile, talking about the incident, Lalu Yadav's son Tejashwi Yadav said, "There's no need for violence during elections... We've never been in favour of violence. The code of conduct is in place right now. It's election time, yet some people are roaming around with guns and bullets. People roaming around with guns and bullets, and you'll see the Prime Minister talking about things from 30 years ago. What happened 30 minutes ago?... Dularchand Yadav was murdered in Mokama. People of what nature have taken over Bihar?"
Meanwhile, Jan Suraaj candidate Piyush Priyadarshi posted a video on Facebook at around 3 pm. In the video, he alleged that JDU candidate from Mokama Anant Singh orchestrated the attack.
