The Delhi police on Tuesday said that a private school student, who was recently apprehended for sending bomb threats, had sent bomb threats to more than 400 schools.
“The family of the juvenile works with an NGO, and that NGO had connection with a particular political party," News18 reported Special CP Law and Order Madhup Tiwari as saying. He added that the non-government organization was also involved in legitimising Afzal Guru, a terrorist who was convicted for his role in the 2001 Indian Parliament attack.
A few days ago, a class 12 student was apprehended for his alleged involvement in sending bomb hoax threats to school. Preliminary investigations revealed that the student had sent out the treats to avoid sitting for exams.
Commissioner Tiwari on revealed that they found thousands of hoax emails forwarded to several schools since February last year and the police have made every effort to track the sender. “The emails were sent in a very sophisticated manner, including the use of VPNs. Hence, we had difficulties in tracing the emails," he said.
The Delhi police was informed about the juvenile suspect on January 8 and it was found after his arrest that he had sent hoax threat emails to more than 400 schools. “We suspected an anti-national or sabotage angle. When we did the profiling of the family of the juvenile as part of the investigation, we found that one of his parents is connected to an organisation with deep connections to an NGO. As per our preliminary info, it was found that the NGO has deep connections to a particular political party," Tiwari said.
Further, Tiwari suspects that he was involved in sending hoax emails to more than 250 schools on May 1 last year and other incidents as well. “This is a preliminary investigation. Further investigation is yet to be done," Tiwari said.
The suspect had sent hoax emails to 23 schools on Thursday last week. Police found the user had sent them through Gmail, which helped them track him down. The student later confessed that emails had been sent by him and some other students using virtual private network (VPN).
