Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Wednesday congratulated "Haryana's daughter" Rekha Gupta on being elected as the new chief minister of Delhi, as celebrations broke out at her native Nandgarh village in Jind district.

Gupta will be the second woman chief minister of Delhi from the BJP camp with a Haryana connection after the late Sushma Swaraj, who spent her childhood days in Ambala.

Rekha Gupta, accompanied by BJP leaders, arrived at the Delhi LG House to formally stake a claim to form the government in Delhi.

After the BJP's central observers' meeting on Wednesday evening, Shalimar Bagh MLA Rekha Gupta was named Delhi’s Chief Minister, with New Delhi MLA Parvesh Verma appointed as Deputy CM.

Who is Parvesh Verma?

-Parvesh Verma, born in 1977, belongs to a well-known political family in Delhi. His father, Sahib Singh Verma, was a former chief minister of Delhi, and his uncle, Azad Singh, previously served as North Delhi Municipal Corporation mayor and contested the 2013 assembly elections from Mundka as a BJP candidate.

-Verma studied at Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram, before pursuing higher education at Kirori Mal College. He later obtained an MBA from the Fore School of Management.

-Verma was the member of the Delhi BJP Election Committee for the 2013 assembly elections. He later in the same year received political prominence when he won the Delhi Legislative Assembly representing the Mehrauli constituency

-In the 2014 general election, Verma won from the West Delhi Lok Sabha Constituency by a record margin of 2,68,586 votes.

- In the recent Assembly polls in Delhi, he defeated former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal from the New Delhi constituency.

Former Delhi chief minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal congratulated Rekha Gupta on becoming the chief minister of Delhi.

Taking to X, he wrote, "I hope that she will fulfill all the promises made to the people of Delhi. We will support her in every work for the development and welfare of the people of Delhi."

Delhi's caretaker CM & AAP leader Atishi congratulated Rekha Gupta for becoming the CM. "I hope that the BJP will fulfil all the promises that they have made to the people of Delhi," Atishi said.

She further stated that her party is ready to extend its support to the BJP for the development work in Delhi.

After being elected as Delhi’s next chief minister, Rekha Gupta expressed gratitude for the support she received. BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad announced that her selection was unanimous. Other candidates for the role included Parvesh, Vijendra Gupta, and Satish Upadhyay.

Delhi BJP chief Virendraa Sachdeva said that at 7 pm today, the party's two central observers (for electing the Leader of the Delhi Legislature Party) will come, and they will announce the name of the chief minister.

The PM, CMs of some states, the party's central leadership, auto-rickshaw drivers, labourers and a few known people from civil society will attend the oath ceremony tomorrow, Sachdeva added.

The BJP is likely to select the Chief Minister from its elected MLAs rather than MPs. Upper castes have consistently supported the BJP in recent years, with their continued backing reflecting strong confidence in the party, Lokniti data shows. The BJP also secured substantial support from OBCs (55%), though its vote share was relatively lower among Gujjars and Yadavs. However, the party struggled to gain traction among Muslims (15%) and Valmikis (25%). In contrast, AAP’s heavy reliance on Dalit and Muslim voters proved inadequate in offsetting the BJP’s broad appeal across a wider electorate.

As per data from the Lokniti-CSDS survey, the BJP's sweeping victory in the 2025 Delhi elections can be largely attributed to its strong support among upper-caste communities. The party secured a significant share of votes across all caste groups, with particularly high backing from Brahmins (66%), Vaishyas (66%), Punjabi Khatris (67%), and Rajputs (60%).

Top BJP leadership including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and party president JP Nadda reached Keshav Kunj, the RSS Headquarters in Delhi's Jhandewalan.

• Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal has written to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal, urging the party to appoint a Dalit leader as the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Delhi Legislative Assembly.

• Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, addressing top party leaders on Wednesday, emphasized accountability for future election results and cautioned against party defectors. His remarks followed the party’s poor performance in the Delhi polls.
• “I want to stress the importance of accountability. You will all be responsible for restructuring the organization in the states and for the outcomes of future elections,” Kharge stated.
• He urged leaders to focus on strengthening the party from the grassroots level, spanning from booth committees to the headquarters. “It is your duty to reinforce the organization by bringing in individuals who are ideologically committed and have remained steadfast with the party during challenging times,” he added.

Ravindra Singh Yadav, special CP law and order, told news agency ANI, "All arrangements are being made, and everything will be in place tomorrow morning. The oath-taking ceremony is expected to have massive crowds, so we are making foolproof arrangements for security, not only for the common people but also for the VIPs who will be attending the function."

The Delhi Traffic Police has released a travel advisory outlining restrictions for commuters in the national capital on Thursday, February 20. "Due to the swearing-in ceremony of the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Delhi on February 20, 2025, at Ramlila Ground, special traffic arrangements have been implemented," the Delhi Traffic Police stated while providing details on road closures and diversions.

"Even after 10 days, they are not able to choose a CM, which shows they do not have a face. The reality is that history could repeat itself and we may see three chief ministers in the next five years just as it happened during the last BJP government in Delhi," he said.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has criticised the BJP for the delay in appointing a Chief Minister for Delhi, alleging internal factionalism within the party.

AAP's chief national spokesperson, Priyanka Kakkar, accused the BJP of prioritizing power struggles over governance. "BJP's focus has never been on governance. There is factionalism within the BJP over who will become Delhi's CM. Why should the people of Delhi suffer amid this tug of war?" Kakkar said in a statement.

As per BJP spokesperson Ajay Alok told on Friday, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi is returning from his foreign visit tonight. A meeting of our parliamentary board will be held tomorrow or the day after. The new Chief Minister of Delhi will be announced then.”

The Delhi Legislative Assembly elections were held on February 5, and the results were declared on February 8.

Several key AAP leaders and cabinet ministers, such as national convener Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Satyendra Kumar Jain, Somnath Bharti, Saurabh Bhardwaj, Rakhi Birla, and Durgesh Pathak, were defeated and lost their seats.

Among the newly-elected MLAs, Parvesh Verma, the BJP's prominent Jat leader in Delhi who triumphed over Kejriwal in the New Delhi seat, along with former Delhi BJP presidents Vijender Gupta and Satish Upadhyay, have been mentioned as leading contenders for the chief minister's position.

The Congress, which held power in Delhi for 15 years (1998-2013), once again failed to secure a single seat, furthering its downward trajectory in the elections.

The AAP, which governed Delhi for over a decade, secured only 22 seats in the fiercely contested elections, the results of which were announced on February 8. Several key AAP leaders, including former CM Arvind Kejriwal, were defeated in their strongholds, while outgoing chief minister Atishi successfully retained her seat.

The BJP won 48 of the 70 seats in the Delhi assembly elections, removing the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) from power in the national capital.

The wait for the new Delhi chief minister is expected to end soon, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) holding its legislative party meeting on February 19, as per ANI sources. All 48 newly elected BJP MLAs will gather at the Delhi BJP office to elect their leader, who will then be sworn in as the new chief minister of the capital.
