Covid-19 in India Updates: Active cases approach 4,000; Delhi reports 47 new cases

Delhi has reported another Covid-related fatality amid a recent rise in infections, bringing the total number of such deaths in the city to four since January and three within the past 10 days. The latest surge in Covid-19 cases mirrors a broader trend being observed across India and several Asian countries.

According to data from the Union Health Ministry, the latest victim was a 22-year-old woman who had underlying conditions, including pulmonary tuberculosis and a bilateral lower respiratory tract infection. She tested positive for Covid-19 before passing away.

Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao on Monday sought to allay fears following a recent uptick in COVID-19 cases in the state, saying the state government is ready for any eventuality.

He said the recent Covid-19-related deaths in the state were not purely due to the virus but were primarily linked to other underlying diseases.

Citing guidelines and instructions issued by Centre, the Health Minister told PTI videos, "This COVID has got mild infections, not very serious impact. But we are alert, and we have ensured that we are ready for any eventuality. All our infrastructure – oxygen, beds, ventilators – all of them are being updated and ensured that in any emergency, we should have all kinds of provisions. So, that way, we are ready." Read more

Delhi recorded 47 new Covid-19 cases since Sunday, bringing the total number of active cases in the capital to 483, according to data from the Union Health Ministry. So far, four deaths have been reported in connection with the infection.

West Bengal recorded 44 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, according to official data released on Monday. The state’s total number of active cases has risen to 331.

During the same period, nine patients recovered from the infection, as per the latest update from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

A senior official from the state health department noted that West Bengal has seen a noticeable rise in active Covid-19 cases over the past week, with 319 people testing positive in the last seven days.

Speaking on the Covid-19 situation in Karnataka, State Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao stated that while the Government of India has indicated the symptoms are mild, the state is fully prepared and equipped to manage any potential emergency.

The Commissioner, Health and Family Welfare has issued the circular for precautions to be taken in government and private schools, as instructed during the Covid-19 situation review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah held on May 26.If children come to school with fever, cough, cold and other symptoms, inform their parents and send them back to home, the Health Department further said. If these symptoms are found among the school teachers and non-teaching staff, they should be advised to follow appropriate precautionary measures, the circular said. It also calls for ensuring adherence to precautionary measures like hand hygiene, cough etiquette and other Covid 19 Appropriate Behaviors (CAB). “Overall, strict adherence to Covid-19 precautionary measures has been instructed in the interest of the health of school children,” it added.

As schools across Karnataka reopened on Monday after summer vacations, students in Bengaluru schools were spotted wearing masks as a precautionary measure amid surge in Covid-19 cases in the state recently.

Students, teachers and non-teaching staffs in many schools across the state were wearing masks and maintained distance during interactions.

Even parents who accompanied students to school were seen wearing masks as they came to drop their children on the first day of school.

Covid-19 appropriate behaviour was seen being followed by students in many schools in Bengaluru City as they lined up at the entrance of the school maintaining distance while entering the premises. Their body temperatures were also being checked by the staffs.

Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, former Chief Scientist at the World Health Organization, said SARS-CoV-2 is now behaving like other seasonal respiratory viruses and the current rise in cases in India is not alarming. She told CNN-News18 that periodic surges every 6–8 months are expected, similar to the influenza virus. India currently has 3,961 active COVID-19 cases, with 203 new infections and four deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

The Delhi High Court has directed the Union Government to submit a detailed status report by July 18 on actions taken regarding COVID-19 sample collection and transportation protocols, following concerns over delays in finalizing SOPs reports ANI. Maharashtra on Sunday reported 65 COVID-19 cases, taking the state's tally since January 1 this year to 814, a health official said.

The 65 cases comprise 31 from Pune, 22 from Mumbai, nine from Thane, two from Kolhapur and one from Nagpur, a health department statement informed.

The active cases in the state as on date stands at 506, while 300 have recovered, it said.

As per data shared by the district administration, on May 31, 94 samples were tested, and three positive cases were detected in Gurgaon on Saturday.

With the symptoms being mild and all patients under home isolation, no deaths due to the coronavirus have been reported so far in Haryana, health officers said.

Given the current COVID-19 situation in the state and the reopening of schools in June, the Karnataka Health Department has issued a circular asking government and private schools to take precautions in the interest of school children's health.

The instructions came following a Covid-19 situation review meeting held by the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on May 26.

The instructions are as follows: If schoolchildren develop fever, cough, cold, and other symptoms, do not send them to school. Follow appropriate treatment and care measures as advised by the doctor.

Children should be sent to school only after the symptoms have completely resolved.

Despite the sudden uptick in cases, health authorities emphasize that there is no reason to panic. Most patients are being cared for at home and experiencing only mild symptoms. The recent rise in cases coincides with the detection of new sub-variants of the Omicron strain, including LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and NB.1.8.1. These variants have been identified through genome sequencing performed in the southern and western regions of India.

In response to the rising numbers, the Delhi government issued a comprehensive advisory on May 23. Hospitals have been instructed to ensure the availability of essential medical supplies, including oxygen, medications, beds, and functional life-support equipment such as ventilators and BiPAP machines.

In the past 24 hours, four men—one each from Delhi, Kerala, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh—have succumbed to Covid-related complications.

India is seeing a sharp uptick in Covid-19 cases, with active infections rising to 3,395 as of Saturday, May 31, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW). The surge marks a significant jump from just 257 cases reported on May 22.

Kerala continues to report the highest number of active cases (1,336), followed by Maharashtra (467), Delhi (375), Gujarat (265), Karnataka (234), West Bengal (205), Tamil Nadu (185), and Uttar Pradesh (117).
