‘Circumstances in India comparable to Nepal’: Congress leader warns, says Constitution shields against turmoil

Claiming that the current situation in India is much like that in its neighbourhood Nepal, Congress leader Udit Raj said discussions are underway over the “possibility” of such violent uprising in the country.

“People are discussing the way in which the public has overthrown power in Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, and whether such a thing could happen in India. Some are even suggesting the possibility of it occurring,” he wrote on X.

His remarks have come amid serious political crisis in Nepal as Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned in the face of massive protests, with the demonstrators storming many government buildings and setting Parliament as well as the houses of several high-profile leaders ablaze.

These developments took place after 19 people died in violence.

The students-led "Gen Z" protests that began against a government ban on social media expanded into a larger campaign, reflecting the growing public criticism of the Oli dispensation and the country's political elite over alleged corruption and apathy towards the common people.

Speaking about the ongoing situation in Nepal, Raj said that the circumstances in India are much similar to that in the neighbouring nation.

“In reality, the circumstances are similar, and in some cases even more so, but our constitution prevents such actions. The roots of our democracy are very deep, which were laid by Congress,” he said.

Meanwhile, after Oli’s resignation, former chief justice Sushila Karki has reportedly been chosen to lead an interim government in the country.

On Wednesday, former external affairs minister and Congress's foreign affairs department chairperson Salman Khurshid said the happenings in Nepal are a matter of concern but there is not a great deal that India can do right now.

"I hope the government has some ideas about how we can be of assistance," Khurshid told news agency PTI.
