Chanapora Assembly Election Highlights: NC's Mushtaq Guroo wins by over 5,600 votes

The 11th and second last round in the Chanapora constituency is underway and NC's Mushtaq Guroo is leading with close to 5,700 votes. The closest rival is Apni Party's Altaf Bukhari, who is trailing.

Early trends from counting of votes on Tuesday showed a tight contest in Jammu and Kashmir. In the UT, the Congress-National Conference alliance was tied at eight seats with the BJP, while the PDP was yet to lead in any seat, according to TV channels.

Prominent figures among those in the fray are NC leader Omar Abdullah (from Budgam and Ganderbal), Sajad Gani Lone of People's Conference (from Handwara and Kupwara seats), Pradesh Congress Committee president Tariq Hamid Karra (Batamaloo) and BJP state president Ravindra Raina (Nowshera seat).

The exit polls on Saturday put the NC-Congress alliance in pole position with the regional party getting the lion's share of the seats.

The BJP is expected to slightly improve its tally of 25 seats won in the 2014 assembly polls while the PDP, which got 28 seats in the polls held 10 years ago, is predicted to win less than 10 seats this time.

Counting of votes for the Assembly Elections in Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir begins.

The fate of candidates on 90 Vidhan Sabha seats across all 22 districts in Haryana and 90 seats across all 20 districts in J&K is being decided today.

In the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir assembly election, the seat of Chanapora is likely to see a two-way race between National Conference’s (NC’s) Mushtaq Guroo and PDP’s Mohammed Iqbal Trumboo. The other candidates include BJP’s Hilal Ahmad Wani, Apni Party’s Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari, Awami National Conference’s A R Wani, and independents Jibran Dar, Showkat Ahmad Bhat, and Sheeban Ashai, according to the Election Commission.

Union minister Chirag Paswan on Monday asserted that he was confident of the NDA's victory in assembly elections to Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir, casting doubts over exit polls, which have predicted opposition INDIA bloc’s win.

Paswan, whose Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) is part of the BJP-led coalition, spoke to journalists here hours before commencement of counting of votes in the northern state and the Union territory.

The counting of votes for the Chanapora assembly constituency, one of the 90 seats in the Jammu and Kashmir legislature, will begin at 8 am today.
