The central government is likely to soon notify rules governing the personal data and its protection, The Economic Times reported on October 30.
The new rules can be notified before the Maharashtra elections, scheduled on November 20, the report said, citing a top government source.
The Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act was passed in August 2023. However, the government is yet to issue the rules for the legislation yet.
Moneycontrol could not independently verify the report.
Early this month, Moneycontrol had reported that the government has asked all the stakeholders, including the industry and different organisations, to not wait for the rules and to prepare themselves for the new law.
Centre communicated this message to stakeholders during a meeting on October 14. Senior officials of Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), National Informatics Centre, members of the industry, civil society and lawyers were among those who attended the meeting.
