In a major twist to the RG Kar Hospital rape-murder case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) informed a Kolkata court that "false records" were created at Tala Police Station. The CBI, tasked by the Calcutta High Court to investigate the death of a junior doctor, also revealed possession of CCTV footage from the police station, which has been sent for forensic examination.
The investigation led to the arrest of Abhijit Mondal, then officer-in-charge of Tala Police Station, on charges of tampering with evidence. Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the hospital's former chief, is also in CBI custody over financial irregularities. Both were produced in court and remanded to judicial custody until September 30.
Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, has been arrested as the prime suspect. He was seen on CCTV entering the room where the doctor’s body was found, hours before its discovery.

The CBI is probing a potential "criminal conspiracy" between Mondal, Ghosh, and Roy, pointing to delays in seizing Roy's clothing, which may have compromised evidence. The agency also flagged a 14-hour gap between finding the body and filing a police report, raising suspicions of a cover-up.
The Bengal government and police are facing intense scrutiny, with allegations of protecting those involved in the crime. Meanwhile, junior doctors, who have been protesting for justice, have partially resumed essential duties.
