Acting on specific intelligence indicating the smuggling of gold from Africa via Mumbai International Airport and its subsequent processing at a melting facility to erase foreign markings before entering the local market, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) initiated action on April 22.

During the operation, DRI seized 9.67 kilograms of smuggled gold, 18.48 kilograms of silver, Indian currency amounting to Rs. 1.92 crore, and $190,000, with a total value of Rs. 10.48 crore.

Four individuals, including two carriers, the recruiter, and the melter, confessed to their involvement in smuggling gold into India. Consequently, they were arrested under the Customs Act, 1962, and remanded to judicial custody.
