Nadda (R), also the Union health minister, had taken over as the party's national president in February 2020.

BJP is likely to get its new president in February 2025 who will replace incumbent JP Nadda, PTI reported quoting a senior party functionary.

Sources told PTI that ongoing organisational election is on track to conclude the polling process in over half of its state units by mid-January.

The exercise will unveil the process of electing the new national president.

According to the BJP constitution, elections to the party's local committees are held first, followed by those for mandal, district, regional and state committees.

Each elected president nominates a team of office-bearers. Once elections in half the states are completed, a full-time national president is elected, who then nominates their team. The entire process takes about two months.

The terms of almost 60 per cent of the BJP's state unit presidents are over, and their replacements are likely to be in place by the middle of the next month, a party leader told PTI.

"We expect that a new BJP president will assume the charge by the end of February," the functionary said.

The functionary said that the new party chief can be either from the government or from within the organisation, adding that nothing has been finalised yet.

Nadda took over the party reins from Amit Shah in February 2020. Though the tenure of a president is of three years, Nadda, who is also the Union health minister, was given an extension in view of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in which the BJP-led NDA returned to power for a their straight term under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.
