The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) cemented an unprecedented third term in Haryana, winning or leading in 48 seats of the 90-member assembly as the party extended gains and witnessed a six-percentage-point jump in vote share.
A Moneycontrol analysis shows that the party’s margin of victory was much more decisive than in the previous election, as 34 of the 48 seats were won with a margin of over 10,000 votes compared with 25 of 40 in the 2019 assembly elections.
Of the 48 seats, the BJP won or was in the lead, nearly 80 percent or 38 seats, had a margin of over 5,000 votes compared with 40 in the last assembly elections in 2019.
The party’s vote share increased to 40 percent from 33 percent in the 2019 assembly election.
Advantage Congress
The grand old party also made its victories more absolute, winning 22 of the 37 seats with a margin of over 10,000 votes, as its vote share rivalled that of the BJP.
The number retained 14 seats, mostly in the Jat-dominated central region, from the previous assembly election of 2019, winning another 12 from the BJP, wresting the rest from other regional players.
On the other hand, BJP retained 26 of the previous seats from the 2019 assembly while capitalising on the coalition of different communities to win other from its erstwhile alliance partner, Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) and the Congress.
Two party state
The performance of the two national parties has reduced Haryana into a two-party state, with Abhay Chautala’s Indian National Lok Dal winning two seats. The JJP, the kingmaker in the last elections, failed to open its account, with the vote share reduced to 0.9 percent.
INLDs vote share was 4.1 percent in 2024 polls.
