Congress highlights hike in 'mithai' prices under BJP rule

The Congress party has targeted the ruling BJP with a new slogan highlighting the rising cost of sweets in India. "Bhaiya, Behen Bol Kar Loot Liya"has become the party's latest tool in their campaign against the BJP's economic policies.

Congress unveiled a series of charts and infographics, pointing out a steep increase in the prices of popular Indian sweets over the past few years.

The infographic shows that price of Gulab Jamun has increased from Rs 160 per kg in 2013 during Congress rule to Rs 300 per kg in 2024, under BJP rule. Similarly, Barfi has seen a steep rise in cost from Rs 243/kg to Rs 600/kg. Price of Motichoor Ladoo raised from Rs 250/kg to Rs 630/kg and Soan Papdi saw a hike from Rs 160/kg to Rs 410/kg.

Congress highlighted that there has been a 30 percent average increase in the cost of traditional mithais like jalebi, gulab jamun, and rasgulla during the BJP rule.

Another infograph showcased the tax on sweets (5%), gift hampers (12%-18%), envelope (12%), zari dhaga (5%) and cotton dhaga (5%)

They dubbed the gst on popular Indian sweets as "tax bandhan", punning on Raksha Bandhan, which upholds the bond between brothers and sisters (bhai behen) and will be celebrated across India tomorrow

The party contended that the current spike in mithai prices is a sign of more significant economic problems that affect regular people.
