The felicitation ceremony for Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title win turned tragic on Wednesday as eleven people were killed and several others were injured in a stampede near the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

The injured have been admitted to Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital and Vaidehi Hospital.

Here’s what happened:

Thousands of people gathered across the city to celebrate RCB’s first win in 18 years as the team arrived there from Ahmedabad -- where the final match between Bengaluru and Punjab Kings took place.

Videos shared across social media platforms showed a large crowd waving the team’s red flag as they waited eagerly to get a glimpse of their favourite players. As the stampede occurred outside the stadium, policemen were seen carrying those injured to an ambulance.

Reacting to the situation, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) slammed the Karnataka government over the arrangements that were put in place, leading to the big tragedy. “Tragic stampede in Bengaluru. A celebration has turned into a nightmare,” wrote BJP leader Amit Malviya on X.

He stated that the heartbreaking incident could have been avoided had crowd control measures been put in place. “This heartbreaking incident could have been avoided. The lack of basic administrative foresight and failure in crowd control by the state government has led to an irreparable loss,” he wrote.

“Accountability must be fixed. Lives were lost due to negligence, not chance,” Malviya stated.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka unit of BJP attacked CM Siddaramaiah and deputy CM DK Shivakumar, saying they were busy shooting reels and hogging limelight with cricketers.

“Shame on this photo-op Congress government. This is criminal negligence. Blood is on the hands of Congress govt,” the party wrote.
